Bob Bondurant began sportscar racing with a Morgan in 1956 and started to attract attention in 1959 when he won the American West Coast “B” Production Championship Chevrolet Corvette.
In 1963, Bondurant joined Carroll Shelby’s Ford Cobra team and he took fourth overall and won the GT class at Le Mans in a Cobra Daytona. In 1965, the Shelby Cobra team won the Manufacturers’ World Championship, dominating in seven of the 10 races. In the 1965-66 F1 season, he drove a factory Ferrari and raced a private BRM. At the end of 1966 he drove one of Dan Gurney’s Eagles at the Mexican GP.
In 1967 an accident in a McLaren CanAm car ended his driving career, but spawned the driving school business which continues to this day: anchored by strong support from Ford Motor Company.
