John Fitch

John Fitch

Our friend John Fitch died on October 21, 2012. We always remember him whenever we drive our interstate highways and see his yellow safety barrels that have saved so many lives.

With a varied career as a blue-water sailor, WWII fighter pilot, test pilot, professional racing driver, team manager, race course director, prolific inventor, highway safety expert, automaker, entrepreneur and “dreamer”, John Fitch has packed an amazing range of experiences into one life.

As a racer, Fitch drove for the Mercedes factory team and was behind the wheel in Jaguars, Cunninghams, Corvettes and a host of other marques. He is also the inventor of the ubiquitous yellow sand barrels, “The Fitch Barrier” seen along highways worldwide.
